Simple workflow

How it works

1

Enter or import text

Paste, type, or choose a TXT, DOCX, or text-based PDF file.

2

Review live counts

Words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs update as the text changes.

3

Adjust the pace

Set reading and speaking speeds that better match your audience or delivery.

4

Copy or download

Keep the text by copying it to the clipboard or downloading a TXT file.

Compatibility

Supported formats

Input: text, TXT, DOCX, or PDF

Direct text and paste are immediate. TXT supports 10 MB, DOCX 25 MB, and PDF 50 MB browser reliability limits.

Output: statistics and TXT

Live measurements stay on the page; the current text can be copied or downloaded as UTF-8 plain text.

Honest expectations

Known limitations

  • Sentence boundaries are estimates based on common punctuation and cannot understand every abbreviation or writing system.
  • Reading and speaking time depend on the chosen pace, content difficulty, pauses, and the individual reader.
  • Scanned PDFs require OCR, which is not included.
  • DOCX layout and non-text objects are ignored during text import.
  • Some complex combined Unicode symbols consist of multiple code points.
  • Very large imported files can be slow or exceed mobile browser memory.

What stays in your browser

Text you type or import is held in the current browser tab. PDF and DOCX extraction workers terminate after completing or failing the task.

The counter does not send text, filenames, document contents, or generated output to analytics. Use the clear control before leaving a shared device.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a word?

The counter recognizes Unicode letters and numbers, along with common apostrophes and hyphens inside words. Repeated spaces, tabs, and blank lines do not add words.

Are emoji counted as characters?

Yes. Character counts use Unicode-aware iteration, so many emoji are counted as one code point. Some combined emoji and accented sequences may contain more than one code point.

How are reading and speaking times calculated?

The word total is divided by the selected speed and rounded up to a whole minute. Defaults are 200 words per minute for reading and 130 for speaking; both are estimates you can adjust.

Can I count words in a PDF or Word file?

Yes. Import a text-based PDF, DOCX, or TXT file. Scanned PDFs without a text layer cannot be counted because OCR is not included.

Is imported text uploaded?

No. File reading and text extraction happen locally. The text is not sent to EditableDocument or included in analytics events.
